Dharma For Today – Outside the Box: Full Length Video Teaching

The following is a full length video teaching by Jetsunma Ahkon Lhamo offered at Kunzang Palyul Choling:

The times are getting darker, and in order to benefit beings we need to come up with creative ways of reaching them. One of those ways is the 24-hour prayer vigil – an American Drupchen. Another is mantra in music. His Holiness Penor Rinpoche has said “mantra is indestructible” – so those who hear it receive blessings no matter how unusual.

Prayer for the Benefit of Beings

The following is from a series of tweets by Jetsunma Ahkon Lhamo:

OM… May all sentient beings know the Dharma and meet the Root Guru Rinpoche immediately upon taking rebirth and remain steadfast on the path.

AH… May all beings display pure speech, by chanting Mantra and reciting Buddha’s teachings. And by praising Him and avoiding gossip.

HUNG… May all sentient beings perform enlightened activity, offering, contemplating, bringing benefit, and all activities that cause Buddhism to remain pure.

May all the Sangha and myself as well correct all mistakes, purify any negativity, defeat all our inner poisons and demons, and fully accomplish Buddhahood.

21 Homages to Tara: The Benefits of Reciting the Praise Khenpo Tenzin Norgay

Thupten Shedrub Gyatso, who was a Tulku in one of the Palyul Monasteries, wrote this commentary. His present incarnation, Rago Chogtrul currently lives in Tibet.

Translation by Khenpo Tenzin Norgey ~ Spring, 2004,
Palyul Retreat Center, Mc Donough, NY USA ~Wood Monkey Year 2131

The Benefits of Reciting the Praise

The wise one endowed with pure respect for the goddess,
Who recites these praises with perfect devotion
Remembering her in the evening and upon waking at dawn,
Will be endowed with complete freedom from fear.

A practitioner who recites the praise in the evening and at dawn, recallingTara’s qualities with pure devotion, and has the wisdom to discriminate between good and bad will be protected from the sixteen fears.  Others will be endowed with complete freedom from all fears.  It is also said that we must meditate on her wrathful form in the evening to pacify the harms of this life, and visualize her peaceful form at dawn and recite the praises to save ourselves from rebirth in the lower realms.

All their sins will be pacified,
Causing destruction to all lower realms.
And the seven million Victorious Ones
Will quickly grant them empowerment.
Thus, they will attain greatness, and progress
To the stage of Buddhahood.

The daily practice of the Twenty-One Praises toTarawill cause all of the practitioner’s sins to be pacified and purified.  Those who recite the praise will not experience the sufferings of the lower realms.  The seven million Victorious Ones who abide with the Noble Lady will swiftly bless and empower the practitioners.  In this life, the practitioners of this praise will achieve the great bliss of place, body, retinue, and the qualities of the dharma of transmitted precepts and realization.  They will swiftly attain the paths and bhumis, and reach the ultimate state of enlightenment.

By remembering Her, the most violent poisons
Abiding in the earth or in beings
Whether eaten or drunk
Will be completely removed.

At the conventional level, practitioners will be protected from terrible diseases, and the pain caused by aconite and other inanimate poisons.  They will be protected from the poisonous fangs, horns, stings and bites of animals.  The practice will also provide protection from the poisonous effect of the evil intentions of malignant spirits, protection from their touch, and the evil eye.  By remembering the goddess and her mantra, the harmful effect of poisons whether they have been eaten or drunk will be nullified.

This can eliminate various sufferings
Inflicted by the spirits, epidemics, and poisons
Even if done for the sake of other beings.

The practice can easily eliminate the suffering inflicted by outer and inner poisons, by dangerous epidemics and possession by evil spirits.  The same benefit can be achieved if the praise is recited for the sake other beings.

On sincerely reciting twice, three times, and seven times
The wish to have child will be fulfilled
And the desire for wealth can be achieved.
All the wishes will be fulfilled
Every hindrance destroyed in its turn

We must recite the praise twice, three and seven times in one session.  We can do the practice either two sessions a day: once during the day, and once during the night, or three sessions during the day and three sessions at night.  The Vajra holders of Indiaand Tibetteach that if one practices the sadhana of “The Four Mandala Offerings[i]” in this way, the desire to have children to continue one’s family line, or to provide students to uphold the dharma lineage will be fulfilled.  In the same way, if one wishes to have wealth for the happiness of this life and the next, excellent prosperity can easily be achieved.  Likewise, any other activities: siddhis[ii], temporal desires and ultimate wishes will be fulfilled.  By the compassion of the Venerable Mother, unfavorable obstacles in the future will not manifest, and harm will not arise from obstacles that have already occurred.  Since all purposes can be fully achieved, the wise must practice this sadhana with enthusiasm.

By explaining the Twenty-One Praises with devotion,
May all access the ocean of siddhis, clear all obstacles
And have the auspiciousness of complete enlightenment,
By swiftly having a vision of Her face, embraced
By the unchanging bliss, endowed with all supreme attributes.

To summarize the text, the meaning of the root mantra is shown in the form of praise.  The twenty-one verses of homage show the twenty-one manifestations of the goddess.

[i] mandala skt offering ~ A Tantric practice in which all precious things are offered to the deities, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in order to develop generosity, the first of the six perfections.

[ii] siddhi skt  ~ Spiritual accomplishments which may be mundane or supramundane. Buddhahood is the ultimate siddhi, mundane siddhis include clairvoyance, clairaudience, flying, etc.

[iii] tulku Tib ~ A reincarnate lama. The Tibetan translation of the Sanskrit “nirmanakaya”, used as an honorific term for recognized incarnations of lamas, who are found, usually in childhood, and are brought up to inherit the lineage and often the monastic foundations of their predecessors.

The Mountain of Burnt Offerings

The following is from the Nam Cho Daily Practice Book from Palyul Ling

Seven-Line Prayer to Guru Rinpoche

HUNG In the northwest country of Uddiyana,

Born in the pollen heart of a lotus,

Endowed with the most marvelous spiritual attainments,

You are renowned as the “Lotus Born.”

Surrounded by a retinue of many Dakinis

Following in your footsteps,

I pray to you, please come forth and grand your blessings!

GURU PEDMA SIDDHI HUNG

The Mountain of Burnt Offerings is Herein Contained

OM SWATI

“The Mountain of Burnt Offerings” is an instruction taken from Lhatsun’s “Vidyadhara-Achievers of Life Force.” To do this practice, prepare some auspicious things such as good quality wood, incense, medicine, and three white and three sweet substances, flour etc. Place them inside a clean container or hearth; light a fire and sprinkle them with clean water.

First Refuge

OM AH HUNG

Of all the refuges in samsara and nirvana present throughout space, the quintessence

Is the power and wrathful vidyadhara, Pema To Treng Tsal.

The phenomenal world is totally perfected within his body as a Buddha mandala.

We take refuge so all beings may cross over unenlightened existence.

(Repeat three times)

Bodhicitta

We generate Bodhicitta on the ground (alaya) of the sphere (bindhu),

The supremely secret, clear light and ultimate wisdom.

So all beings may purify the three obscurations,

And attain the spontaneously self-perfected bindu of body, speech and mind, and through the four spontaneous visions, attain liberation in the youthful vase body.

(Repeat three times)

Seven Part Suppliation

I pay homage to the continuously present and unmodified nature of pure presence (rigpa.)

I offer the clear light, freedom from depths and limits.

I confess within the vast expanse, the equality of samsara and nirvana.

I rejoice in the great wearing out of reality, freedom from conception.

I ask you to always turn the wheel of dharma, the great perfection,

And to churn up the depths of samsara.

Free from the limiting three conceptions, I dedicate this to reaching the far limit.

Self-Visualization

From the dimension of primordial ultimate reality and the unceasing potency,

In Pema To Treng: white-reddish body, youthful and handsome.

The brightness of his noble symbols and marks are blazing, holding vajra and kapala,

Perfectly adorned with majestic ornaments and garments.

Imagined form and wisdom are not separate; the form embodies all enlightened beings,

The great splendor of everything within samsara and nirvana.

OM AH HUNG BENZAR GURU PEDMA SIDDHI HUNG

(Recite mantra many times)

RAM YAM KAM

Based on emptiness, the burnt substances are transformed into inexhaustible amrita

That emanates throughout space massive clouds of vast desirable qualities.

(Bless with the three syllables, the repeat the treasury mantra three times:)

NAMA SARWA TATHAGATE BHAYO BISHO MU KHE BHE SARWA THA KHAM UTGA TE SAPHA RANA E MAM GA GA NA KHAM SOHA

Inside a vast container made from the essence of vajra jewels,

Objects pleasing to the senses of mundane existence, the samaya substances,

Blessed by the three syllables become wisdom amrita.

Offering clouds pleasing to the senses swirl throughout the phenomenal world.

These are offered to the lamas, yidams, dakinis and Dharma protectors;

To however many Buddha mandalas there are in the ten directions;

To our other guests, the Dzambuling lords of the land, the six kinds of beings and those to whom we owe karmic debts;

Particularly to those who steal life and life force,

Those who send illness, elemental spirits who stir up obstacles,

Those who send bad signs and indications in our dreams and send all kinds of bad omens,

The eight types of demons who are masters of malevolent magical projections,

Those to whom we owe karmic debts of food, housing and wealth,

Demons who are masters of obscurations, demons who cause insanity, male and female ghosts,

Demons who cause fatal accidents, demons who take the essence of health and wealth, other demons who live in cities, all male and female demons.

As the red flames burn, karmic debts are paid back.

Whatever is desired arises as desirable qualities.

As long as there is a sky,

We form the intention that these desirable qualities be inexhaustible!

The negativities and obscuration we have accumulated in the three times

And our incorrect use of offerings to the three jewels or for the benefit of the dead,

Are purified by the flames offered in this burnt generosity.

Each flame is an atom containing the entire phenomenal world.

Inexhaustible masses of Kuntuzangpo offering clouds.

Thoroughly permeate the pure realms of all Buddhas.

Flames radiate offering clouds of five-colored wisdom lights,

Pervading the six realms of existence, even the worst hell realm (Avici,)

The three planes of samsara are liberated in the luminous form of the rainbow body.

May all beings awaken to the very heart of enlightenment.

OM AH HUNG

(Recite the three syllables 100 or 1000 times etc, and then:)

In an immeasurable container, the three dimensions of existence (kayas,)

The ultimate, blissful and manifest form aggregates of the phenomenal world

Melts into amrita, filling space with rainbow lights.

This inexhaustible, quintessential amrita of samsara and nirvana,

Since forever and until now,

Is totally dedicated to our guests in the phenomenal world.

Having perfected the levels, paths and fruition qualities,

And having completely dispelled the obstacles to view, meditation and action,

Within the dynamic space-like dimension of Kuntuzangpo’s realization,

May we attain the immortality of the youthful vase body.

When the great ocean of samsara is empty,

May we awaken in Akanishta, land of the lotus nets.

Aggregates and elements are burnt substances blazing radiantly and brilliantly.

White and red bodhicitta are burnt substances blazing blissfully yet non-substantially.

Emptiness and compassion are burnt substances pervading the dimension of real existence (dharmadhatu.)

Within the phenomenal world, in the ground of the five vajra lights of samsara and nirvana,

We offer the burnt substances of spontaneously self perfected and complete enlightenment.

May all previous karmic debts be purified.

May they not remain in our present stream of being; we openly admit our errors.

In the future, may we not experience cyclic obscurations.

As to the vows and trainings of the pratimoksha, bodhisattva and vidyadhara paths,

And the many kinds of secret mantra commitments (samayas,)

We openly admit all breeches committed consciously or unconsciously.

May all illness, demons, obscurations and impurities be purified.

May the times of plague, famines, and weapons be pacified.

May the times of foreigners invading the central land be averted.

May the obstacle of the guru being invited to manifest Dharma elsewhere be averted.

May inauspicious bad omens for the country of Tibet be averted.

May the planetary forces, nagas and king-like spirits who take away our life force be repelled.

May the eight great fears and sixteen lesser ones be averted.

Where ever we live, may all inauspiciousness be averted.

May the power, strength and energy of demonic forces be repelled.

OM AH HUNG

When accumulating, start again from “Drung”

At the End:

May all the Buddhas be pleased with these offerings.

May the minds of the oath-bound ones be satisfied.

May the desires of the six kinds of beings be satisfied.

May our karmic debts and debts of the flesh be purified.

May the two accumulations be completed.

May the karmic traces of the two obscurations be purified.

May the two sacred dimensions be attained.

Through the power of this vast and great generosity,

May we become self arisen Buddhas for the benefit of beings.

May all beings who were not liberated by previous Buddhas,

Be liberated through this generosity.

May the elemental spirits who are living here or visiting,

Living on earth, under it, in the sky or wherever,

Always be loving towards beings,

And practice Dharma day and night.

Through this virtue may all beings

Perfectly accumulate merit and wisdom,

And from this merit and wisdom,

May they attain two sacred dimensions.

Not clothed with exertion and effort,

May it happen auspiciously that the wish fulfilling tree,

Fulfill the hopes of beings,

and accomplish their intention.

(Thus recite the words of auspiciousness and dedication.)

This practice is known as the diamond practice. It can prolong life and remove obstacles, particularly those with unpaid karmic debts. This was revealed in Sikkim, the secret hidden land, to Namkha Jigmed by the dakinis who revealed it to him as the practice which opens the gate to the secret land.

Prayer: The Wish That All Dear Parent Sentient Beings May Be Free of Suffering

The following is from the “Ship to Liberation” an extensive commentary by Karma Chagmed Rinpoche on “Buddha in the Palm of the Hand”

Now, with the wish that all dear parent sentient beings

may be free from suffering,

repeat this prayer from the Ship to Liberation:

KYE MA KHOR WA THAR MED GYATSHO’I DONG RING DU

Alas!  In the depths of this endless ocean of samsara,

TI MUG MA RIG LE KYI NAR WA YI

Punished by the karma of deluded ignorance,

DRO NAM DE WA DÖD CHIR DUG LA CHÖD

All beings desire bliss but behave with negativity.

THAB LA MI KHE MONG NAM NYING RE JE

Oh, how pitiful is the condition of all ignorant beings who fail to understand the method!

LE DRIB DUG NGAL DREL WAR CHIN GYI LOB

Grant blessings to free us from the suffering of karmic obscurations.

ZUNG DZIN GYI CHING TSÖN RAR DRO DI DAG

These beings who are punished in the jail of their own duality,

RI DAG GYAR TSHÜD LAR JUG JI ZHIN DU

Just like deer caught in the snare of a trap,

TI MUG CHEN NAM DRO DRUG DRONG KHYER DIR

Deluded beings in the great city of the six classes,

YANG NE YANG KHOR DRO NAM NYING RE JE

Oh, how pitiful it is, for they are continually revolving again and again in samsara!

RIG DRUG KHOR WA TONG PAR CHIN GYI LOB

Grant blessings to empty the six realms of samsara.

DUG NGAL CHI TSAM THONG YANG MI JIG PA’I

Even though they see suffering for what it is, they are unafraid.

NYING SEN CHEN NAM MI TSHE YENG KAB ZED

With courageous effort they exhaust their lives pursuing endless distractions.

LO TED MED PAR MA SHE KHOR WA DIR

In this untrustable state of cyclic existence, they remain unaware.

LAR ZHEN KYID DÖD MI TSHE DUG GI DA

Attached to the desire for happiness, they spend their lives in discontent.

MI TAG ZHEN LOG DREN PAR CHIN GYI LOB

Grant blessings to remember impermanence and to turn away from attachment to this world.

CHI NÖD JIG TEN NANG CHÜD SEM CHEN DANG

The external vessel, this world, and the inner essence, its living beings,

NA NING DA LO NAM DA’I TÖD MED DANG

Last year, this year and through the flux of the waxing and waning moon,

ZHAG RE NYIN TSHEN KED CHIG GYUR WA LA

Each day and night are changing in every instant.

SAM ZHIG TONG NA RANG NYID CHI WE TUG

If carefully examined, the time of death is impending.

KYO SHE NYING RÜ NÜ PAR CHIN GYI LOB

Grant blessings that we may have the courage and potential to recognize this futility.

DAL JOR CHO GYED DEN DI NYED KA YANG

Even though this body of eighteen freedoms and endowments is hard to find,

CHI DAG NED KYI TAB TSHE CHÖ MED NAM

When the Lord of Death gives us our final illness, those beings without Dharma,

RIN CHEN LING CHIN TONG LOG NYING RE JE

How pitiful!  Like going to a continent full of precious jewels and returning empty-handed.

DAG SOG DRO KÜN KHOR WA DUG NGAL GYI

For myself and all other sentient beings who are suffering in samsara,

NE LE DA TA THAR WAR CHIN GYI LOB

Grant blessings to be liberated from this condition at this very moment!

(By thinking about the meaning of these words, carefully examine them and take them to heart.)
