Who Will Captain Your Ship?

When Vajrayana teachers point out the importance of Guru Yoga and View, these teachings arise from their clear understanding of the nature of samsara. The nature of how we, ordinary beings, are seduced by our habits of mind, how we are each ensnared in our own dream, unable to recognize the truth, ceaselessly creating our own world of suffering. The teachers see this clearly, while we ordinary beings, for the most part, are totally clueless. We fall for the deception so completely we mistake our habitual concepts for “reality.”

Even in our ordinary perceptions we rarely perceive what is actually happening. In a recent teaching on twitter Jetsunma points this out:

“Even scientists find that once we have seen an object with our eyes, the brain files it away. When we ‘see’ it again we actually fill in, once we ‘decide’ what it is, almost all the detail from memory. We may, in fact, never see the same object twice. Once we identify we fill in the actual ‘seeing’ with our own habitual thinking.” – Waking from the Dream

It takes courage to face this within ourselves, to accept that maybe we really don’t have all the answers, or worse, that maybe we don’t even know how to find them. However, if we, as students on the Vajrayana path, are tempted to deceive ourselves into thinking we can “teach ourselves” the Dharma because sublime and profound teachings have been published in books, we run the risk of “filling in the actual ‘seeing’ with our own habitual thinking.” An example would be the famous Rorschach Inkblot Test, where psychoanalysts have patients report what they see in a series of inkblots. If we were able to perceive what was actually there this test would be useless, everyone would see the same thing, everyone would agree on the meaning. But this is not the case. Simply because something has been printed in words, does not mean we can arrive at a true understanding, even if we agree on the words. The inkblots don’t change from person to person, but the interpretation does.

Yeshe Tsogyal lamented as Guru Rinpoche was leaving Tibet:

“The luckless Tibetans have lost their eyes.

Now who will lead us when we are blind and alone?

Now we can only guess as to the nature of things;

now we must look to books for teachings…

now a grievous time has come!”

From “Mother of Knowledge: The Enlightenment of Ye-shes mTsho-rgyal” by Nam-mkha’I snying-po translated by Tarthang Tulku

Yeshe Tsogyal was already accomplished at the time she called out to Guru Rinpoche, yet she, like all Vajrayana teachers, never ceased to cherish the Root Guru above all else.

If we are sincere in our aspiration to cross the ocean of suffering that is samsara, to attain Enlightenment in order to be of true benefit to beings, we must swallow the bitter pill of acknowledging we don’t know how, that we don’t even have a clue as to how, and learn to rely on a captain that has navigated this ocean many times.

We have the extraordinary fortune to have a teacher such as Jetsunma available to us right here, right now. When she teaches on the supreme importance of the Guru it isn’t for any other purpose than to help us discern the difference between sublime Wisdom, and our ordinary understanding, to guide us to the truth.

For those who visit this blog, or follow her on twitter, you know that Jetsunma offers kindness and practical guidance to everyone, whether you wish to become a serious student of Vajrayana or you just want to understand how to live a happier life. It is my hope in writing this post, however, that if you are serious about the Vajrayana path, that you may gain confidence that Jetsunma is able to nourish everyone, at every level, up to the most sublime.

Whether it is Jetsunma or some other qualified teacher, may you find your true and unwavering guide.

May any merit or virtue generated by this effort be devoted to the liberation of every being lost in confusion.

Thank You for Your Support!

This evening Jetsunma tweeted the following:

“Goodnight sweethearts, sweet dreams. Rumors of my demise on twitter are greatly fabricated as are rumors of my own blog being on its way down.”

The “staff” here at Tibetan Buddhist Altar (TBA) wanted to reassure our audience that readership is up, growing by 10% last month with over 6,500 visits in January alone.  Jetsunma is teaching nearly every day live, in real time, on twitter, and we post those teachings here on TBA the same day. We are also working to edit more than 20 years of archived teachings, and offering teachings from other Lineage Lamas.  There are “new” teachings offered here daily!

We are grateful for the support of all our readers, and for all the comments and questions. It is Jetsunma’s wish that this blog become a virtual Dharma community where people around the world can be provided with the resources they need, whether they wish to practice Buddhism or are simply seeking practical advice on how to live a happier, more fulfilling life.

Jetsunma is available to all, openly, on twitter, almost every day. She offers her insights,  guidance and sense of humor, as well as engages in friendly discussions with people from all walks of life. On January 9th Jetsunma had 3,863 followers, and today she has 4,552, and continues to seek connections with new friends around the world.

Those who do follow her on twitter may be aware that she, like many public figures, also encounters some opposition, but we wanted to share these “stats” to let readers know, as she tweeted, reports of her demise are indeed fabricated.

She took this opportunity to share the following advice:

“This is an opportunity to learn to focus on this point in the time and space grid. I totally recommend living in the particular “probability” your body is floating in.  Rest well, wake up shining! Love to you all!”

It is our sincere wish that all these efforts bring some benefit to those that come to share these blessings.

Jetsunma Ahkon Lhamo and Empowerment

In late October of 2010, after repeated requests by many devoted students, Jetsunma Ahkon Lhamo agreed to begin formal training in offering empowerments, or wangs.  In so doing, Jetsunma is offering an incalculable blessing to Western students. She has said in her teachings that she was born in Brooklyn, as a woman, for a particular purpose – to display to Western students, especially female students, that enlightenment is possible for all, that it transcends culture and gender, that it is not the exclusive product of some exotic foreign culture.

Jetsunma, born Alyce Zeoli, was the first Western Woman to be recognized as a Tulku, or incarnate Lama, and formally enthroned. His Holiness Pedma Norbu Rinpoche, the 11th Throneholder of Palyul, and at that time the Supreme Head of all Nyingmapa, His Holiness Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, and Dzongnang Rinpoche all agreed that Alyce Zeoli was indeed the reincarnation of Genyenma Akhon Lhamo, the sister of Rigdzin Kunzang Sherab, the First Throneholder of the Palyul lineage. In 1988, during the first bestowal of the Rinchen Terzod in the West, she was enthroned as a Lineage Holder of  Palyul by His Holiness Pema Norbu Rinpoche.

During her enthronement ceremony His Holiness made the following statement:

What is her responsibility at this point, as a tulku, is that she is responsible for propagating the Dharma and for being of benefit to sentient beings, and she has no other responsibility but that. See video of the Enthronement Ceremony here

By enthroning Jetsunma as a Lineage Holder, His Holiness Pedma Norbu Rinpoche was declaring that students could have total confidence in her qualifications. In the following excerpt from Great Perfection Buddha in the Palm of the Hand, Gyaltrul Rinpoche describes the significance of this title:

Otherwise, any lama whose name appears in any of Guru Rinpoche’s prophecies, who is a designated lineage or terma holder, or who is the owner of a dharma transmission, can be relied upon straight away. Such a lama is a supreme lama to receive dzogchen transmissions from. – Great Perfection Buddha in the Palm of the Hand, page 44, Yeshe Melong Publications, 1992

In 2005 His Holiness referred to his recognition of Jetsunma at his New York Retreat:

Jetsunma, a long time ago, I met with her, I examined her for a while, and found her to be the incarnation of Rigdzin Kunzang Sherab’s sister known as Ahkon Lhamo….Jetsunma is a good and perfect teacher. I don’t think that she is deceiving anybody. Among Jetsunma’s students there are a whole bunch of monks and nuns and all of them are disciplined by her. What other woman in America could do that? There is nobody else. She is good and special.   See video of His Holiness’s comments here.

At the time of her recognition and enthronement, Jetsunma had not received any formal training in Buddhism. She has, since that time, received extensive empowerments, lungs and teachings both in India and at her center, Kunzang Palyul Choling (KPC) in Maryland, from many Great Masters.

She also had an opportunity to receive the entire transmission for the Rinchen Terdzod directly from His Holiness, all of the empowerments, all of the pith essential pointing out instructions and commentaries that are found in that precious terma treasury, and she received it in a way that an elderly lama would receive it, an elderly Tibetan lama.  And so she had this opportunity to completely internalize all of those blessings, which is very extraordinary. His Holiness Jigme Phuntsok See video of this commentary here

Jetsunma has therefore gathered all the necessary requirements to offer empowerment, the wangs, the lungs, the pith instructions, she has accumulated millions of mantras and accomplished the practices, has been recognized and enthroned as a Lineage Holder and carries the blessings of her teachers.

Jetsunma Ahkon Lhamo, born in a “barbarian” land (according to the Buddhist teachings a “barbarian land” is one where the Dharma does not exist,) as a woman, growing up without the supports of the tradition, without formal training, yet through the profound accomplishments of her past lives was able to give rise to the Dharma from her own mind, to the point where her teacher, His Holiness Pedma Norbu Rinpoche, traveled across oceans and continents to find her and establish the Palyul Lineage in that same, once barbarian land.

Having overcome the lack of formal training in the traditions of her Lineage through diligent practice and study, Jetsunma is now, in response to the devotion of her students, undertaking a new level of training.

Jetsunma had her students send a letter to the current Throneholder of Palyul, His Holiness Karma Kuchen Rinpoche informing him of their request for Jetsunma to begin offering wangs and her intention to begin training. Word was received today that His Holiness Karma Kuchen was surprised by this communication, replying it was “unusual for him to be told.”  He was surprised we felt the need to inform him. At enthronement the Tulku is given all the blessings of the Lineage, at that time the Tulku may upon training, immediately give empowerment.

When visiting KPC on his last visit to the US, His Holiness Karma Kuchen referred to His Holiness Pedma Norbu Rinpoche’s recognition in the following way:

As you all know how this center started, the late His Holiness Tulku Pedma Norbu Rinpoche, a Palyul Throneholder and Tulku, with the intention to spread the Buddha Dharma and especially the Secret Mantrayana Teaching, he recognized Jetsunma as the incarnation of Ahkon Lhamo, who was the sister of Rigzin Kunzang Sherab, the founder of the Palyul Lineage. See video of this commentary  here

Jetsunma Ahkon Lhamo is continuing to fulfill the wishes of her root teacher by undertaking this new training. May those with faith in the profound Buddha Dharma rejoice!

May any merit or virtue generated by this account be devoted to the swift liberation of every suffering being, and to the long life, strong health and enduring happiness of Jetsunma Ahkon Norbu Lhamo.

I confess any faults or errors in this account are purely my own, through the limitations of my poor view and ordinary understanding.

Auspicious Signs on Lha Bab Duchen

On this holiest of days, Lha Bab Duchen, through the great kindness of my Teacher, Jetsunma Ahkon Lhamo, I had the good fortune to be able to sit in her prayer room for a short time of practice. At the end of the practice, I looked up to enjoy the great splendor of Jetsunma’s many objects of devotion — the statues, thangkas, crystals, and relics.

It was then I noticed that a silk sash from the thangka of Guru Rinpoche which hung in the center of the main altar, had moved to drape over the crown of a White Tara statue to its right. And then I saw that the katag that hung on the picture of His Holiness Penor Rinpoche had somehow moved to its left to also gently drape on the crown of the same White Tara statue. Windows were all closed, there was no fan or breeze in the room to explain this event.

It was astonishing, as though both Guru Rinpoche and His Holiness were blessing and protecting White Tara’s presence among us, who is Jetsunma Ahkon Lhamo herself. Eh Ma Ho!

Tobacco: ‘the guide that leads the blind on a false path which ends in a precipice’ by Dudjom Rinpoche

* The following essay was originally translated (with the benefit of explanations by Khenpo Pema Shérab) by Könchog Ten’dzin in 1979. This
current translation was produced by the translation committee of the Confederate Sanghas of Aro in 1999 with advice from Ngak’chang Rinpoche and
Khandro Déchen.

Tobacco: ‘the guide that leads the blind
on a false path which ends in a precipice’

OM SWASTI: With supreme appreciation and deep respect for Padmasambhava – wisdom manifestation of all Buddhas and union of the Buddha families
– I shall relate the history of tobacco. Approximately a hundred years after Buddha Shakyamuni’s parinirvana, a Chinese demon maddened with obsession, spoke these dying words:
“Through my body I wish to lead the beings of this earth to lower realms. Bury my body intact and eventually a plant, different from all others, will grow out of my remains. Merely by smelling it, people will experience pleasure in body and mind, far more joyful than the union of male and female. It will spread far and wide until most of the beings on this earth will enjoy it.”

At present the actual fruition of this wish is clearly evident. Opium and other related intoxicants are taken by mouth or nose, neither help quench thirst or satisfy hunger. They do not possess a taste which is delicious, and they are bereft of anything which promotes health or which strengthens one’s life force. These substances serve to increase nervousness and blood pressure. They also cause cancer and pulmonary disease.
At this time, many people, from all levels of society, develop irresistible attraction for these substances and proceed to consume them without control – and thus demonic intentionality has borne fruit.

In the gTérma of Chögyal Ratna Lingpa it is stated:
‘Padmasambhava bound the Nine Demonic Brothers under oath, but they were breakers of samaya , and the youngest of them found a way to undermine their commitment to protect beings. He told his kindred: “Brothers, do not despair, listen to me. I shall manifest myself in the country of China as tobacco; the name of this toxin will be ‘the black poison’. It will grow in the border lands, from whence it will spread to Tibet. The people of Tibet will consume this enjoyable substance. By the strength of this, the five neurotic poisons will increase. Rejecting the ten positive actions, people will practise the ten negative ones. The lives of the lineage holders will become precarious, and they will depart for the Buddha Fields. The smoke of this poison, penetrating the earth, will annihilate hundreds of thousands of cities of the kLu . Rain will not fall, harvest and livestock will not thrive, there will be civil unrest, plagues, and calamities. The poison’s smoke rising into the sky will destroy celestial dimensions, untimely eclipses and comets will appear. The essential fluids and veins of those who smoke will dehydrate. It causes the four hundred and four diseases to arise. Whomever smokes will be reborn in the lower realms. If one smokes and others inhale the odour, it will be as if one were ripping out the hearts of six million beings.’

According to the gTérma of Sang-gyé Lingpa:
‘In this decadent age people will indulge in unwholesome behaviour. In particular, rather than eating nourishing food, people will consume the substances which are poisonous and evil smelling. Interrupting what they are doing, they will consume the poison. They will need to spit, their noses will run, their health and complexion will fade.’

The gTérma of Rig’dzin Go’dem predicts:
“In the ultimate decadent age people will absorb poisonous vomit, food of dri za’i . Merely smelling it, one will go to the Mar-med Myal-wa. For this reason give it up right now.”

From the predictions discovered by Düd’dül Dorje:
‘Practitioners will enjoy inhaling the smoke of these plants and sniffing their powder and the country will be invaded by samaya breakers. They will be deceived by illusion and experience the arising of obsessive characteristics. As a sign of the exhaustion of merit they will have causes for tears which will flow uncontrollably.’

The gTérmas of Longsel reveal:
‘The time when people smoke these vile substances is also the time when close friends will poison each other’s minds.’

The gTérma of Thugchog Dorje specify:
‘Because of the five neurotic poisons, the obsessions, animosities, strife, arguments, and miseries of beings will blaze like an inferno. As the ten good qualities are discarded, negativity will rage like a storm. Wholesome behaviour will be neglected, while perverse practices will be promulgated. In this degenerate age the Protectors will vanish as demonic beings assume power. People will inhale tobacco smoke, and the spatial-veins of discriminative wisdom will become blocked, whilst agitation and distorted emotions become intensified. The central channel will be obstructed and the clarity of awareness dies. Exhaustion of energy will cause agitation around the world. Religious artifacts, the objects of veneration, will deteriorate; perverted ideologies and false religions will spread. The Protectors will turn aside and look only towards Mount Méru. Foreigners will invade Tibet, and Tibetans will be forced to stray in the border lands. Doctrines of Illusion will spread and the world will become a dimension of hell.’

The gTérma of Dro’dül Lingpa predicted:
‘By merely smelling the odour of these herbs, grasses and leaves will spring from demonic blood, one will find oneself in Vajra Hell.’

A prediction of Ma-gÇig Labdrön states:
‘In the final period of disputation a substance will appear which one ingests orally, and it will aggravate all five neuroses . It will
originate in China, extend to Mongolia and Tibet. Wherever it travels it will be consumed, and wherever it is consumed – rainfall will become irregular, accompanied by severe frost and hail. If practitioners consume this substance, even were they to practise for a hundred æons – they will not realise their yidams. In future lives, they will wander incessantly in the three lower realms, where even the compassion of the Buddhas will have no power to help them.’

There are innumerable other predictions concerning tobacco – the use of which has been particularly forbidden by accomplished masters of both Sarma and Nyingma traditions. The vajra words of Padmasambhava were not given to deceive practitioners, so do not entertain doubts as to: ‘how can so many problems arise from smoking a natural plant?’ Aconite is also a plant, yet eating a small quantity of it can be lethal. If this should be the case with a plant, at the physical level, why couldn’t the fruit of the demonic intentionality cause spiritual death?
Understanding this, the wise will render themselves a great kindness by renouncing tobacco and narcotics. In doing so, may the honourable and wise who avoid the path to the precipice have the good fortune of finding respite in the ecstatic garden of liberation.

This was written at the request of Golok Gé-rTa Jig’mèd, by Dorje Yeshé (His Holiness Düd’jom Rinpoche)

GARUDA AVIARY: TIME TO STEP UP TO THE PLATE

Nearly everyone considers the Garuda Aviary Parrot Rescue to be a great thing.  The Aviary cares for over 40 parrots and other large birds that have been abused, abandoned or neglected, and visitors to the temple are always impressed with the birds.  We get lots of praise for the Aviary, but how many of us actually take part in supporting this meritorious activity?

It is hard work, taking care of that many hungry mouths every day.  They eat a lot, and they have to eat every day.  It costs a lot of money just to feed them.  When the money runs out, they still have to eat.  We can’t skip a few days until we get some more money.  A generator is also needed for the Aviary to keep the temperature safe for the birds when the power goes out, which it does sometimes.  Right now there is only one person actually taking care of the parrots.  They need a lot of attention. They’re like two-year olds that live 80 years or more.  There is very little money coming in, despite the widespread interest. The plain truth is that the donations don’t match the praise.

There are many ways that each of us can help with the Aviary.  If you don’t know how you can help, ask.  Call Claire Waggoner at 928-713-3522 or email garudaaviary@earthlink.net if you want to find out how you can help or to volunteer.  You can also make a cash donation here: http://www.garudaaviary.org/financial_donations.html.  Even just taking a donation can home to put your spare change in helps.

Perhaps we should ask ourselves if we still have the ability to love.  These sentient beings need us.  Their very lives depend on us.  We have the power and the means to give them what they need.  Can we look inside ourselves and find the love that can accomplish that?  Because that’s the only way it’ll happen.
